We are pleased to announce that our next keynote speaker will be Mik Critchlow on November 17th 2019.
Mik is a social documentary photographer from the North East of England. He has worked on long-term community based projects for over forty years. His book ‘Coal Town’ will be published by Blue Coat Press in Spring / Summer 2019 and showcases his photographs of Ashington from the 80’s and 90’s.
Mik’s work has featured in the BJP, Amateur Photographer, Creative Camera, The Independent and The Guardian.
Our thanks to Craig Atkinson from Cafe Royal Books who made the short trip over from Southport to give his excellent talk to Lancashire Monochrome on the 17th March 2019. Craig has been publishing books for over 10 years and produces around 1 a week. To date he has published 580 books of which 400 are in the photo series – by his own estimation there are probably over 100000 books in circulation!
This massive body of work is centred around British documentary photography and has featured the work of both unknown photographers to the very well known. The books are in both private collections and public collections such as the V&A, and fill in some important gaps in the chronology of British documentary.
Craig studied art and was a pcraticing artist and used the A5 zine format to publish his own work as an artist / illustrator/ photographer / collector before starting to publish the work of others. He’s also a lecturer at UCLan in Preston. All that, and he’s a thoroughly decent chap as well!
Follow Craig on Twitter @craigatkinson and Cafe Royal @caferoyalbooks as well as on Instagram and Facebook.
Our next keynote speaker will be Dave Butcher, who will be doing a print based presentation. The morning presentation will be Snow Light and the afternoon presentation will be City Light.
Dave worked for Ilford Photo for 21 years as a photographic research scientist, technical service manager, regulatory affairs manager and project management before leaving in 2002. He continues to work in film and maintains close relations with Ilford – he is an Ilford Master Darkroom Printer and gives black and white darkroom printing masterclasses to colleges and universities on behalf of Ilford Photo.
While the event is free of charge to Lancashire Monochrome members, a £10 charge applies to visitors, payable on the day to Dave Flemming.
